The Problems

These are the actual problems the work exists to solve. Everything else follows from them.

  1. Single-Planet Concentration Risk. A single-planet species is a single point of failure for everything consciousness has become. All current human continuity — biological, cultural, technological, civilisational — remains concentrated on one world. There is no durable second locus of human continuity.
  2. Hemispheric and Geographic Concentration. Even on Earth, heavy-lift, recovery, and industrial capacity for multiplanetary operations remains heavily concentrated in a limited set of geographies. Lack of geographic redundancy increases systemic fragility.
  3. High-Latency Intelligence Gap. Multiplanetary and deep-isolation operations will run under high latency, intermittent connectivity, and contested bandwidth. Local-first inference and memory are no longer the gap — mature open-source components run models on commodity hardware without external dependency, and flight software has operated under real light-time delay for decades. What does not exist is the layer above that substrate: consent enforceable at runtime rather than a deployment posture, continuity of memory and agency guaranteed rather than incidental, and fail-safe isolation as specified, tested behaviour rather than a side effect of running locally.
  4. Continuity of Consciousness Treated as Optional. Many systems optimise for throughput, engagement, or capability while treating memory, agency, and continuity of the human operator as secondary. Under distance and isolation this becomes a civilisational risk, not a product preference.
  5. Dreams Without Infrastructure. The long human dream of the stars remains largely aspirational while the physical substrate — recovery geography, feedstock, energy, high-latency systems, continuity protocols — is incomplete. Vision without infrastructure remains fantasy; infrastructure without vision remains mere logistics.
  6. Sovereignty and Consent Under Distance. As systems become more capable and more remote, the default risk is soft lock-in, silent dependency, and loss of meaningful human control. Sovereignty and active consent are not yet default properties of the architectures being built for multiplanetary conditions.
